Mortar is the sacrificial layer in a brick wall. It's designed to fail before the brick does, taking the weather so the units themselves last a century. The problem is that once that mortar goes soft, sandy or hollow, it stops being a barrier and starts being a drain, pulling water behind the wall and setting up the freeze-thaw cycles that split brick faces. The fix is raking the failed joints to the right depth, matching the mortar strength and colour to the original, and packing it tight. Done right it disappears into the wall and buys another few decades.
