Brick veneer is not bricks glued to a wall. It's a cavity wall system: a non-structural layer of full-thickness or thin brick tied back to the structural wall with galvanized metal ties, separated by an air gap that lets moisture drain and vapour escape, with weep holes at the base to release any water that gets through, and head flashing above every window and door opening. When that assembly is built correctly, brick veneer is one of the most durable and low-maintenance exterior cladding systems available. When it's done without the ties, the air gap, or the flashing, it's only a matter of time before the brick delaminates or traps water against the sheathing.

When to Call for Brick Veneer in Surrey
A concrete block, poured concrete or plain stucco exterior
Brick veneer over an existing wall transforms the exterior character of a building and adds a layer of weather protection in the process.
An addition or new build that needs to match existing brick
Matching the original brick size, colour and coursing so the addition reads as original requires sourcing, dry-laying and careful lead-setting.
An interior feature wall, fireplace breast or commercial accent
Thin brick applied to interior walls gives the authentic look and texture of full brick at a fraction of the weight and cost.
Our Brick Veneer Process in Surrey
- 1
Structural and substrate check
We confirm the wall framing or CMU can carry the veneer weight, check for existing moisture problems, and plan the tie layout.
- 2
Barrier, ties and ledger
Vapour-permeable barrier goes on, galvanized ties are fastened at the right spacing, and a shelf angle or foundation ledge is set as the starting course.
- 3
Lay the veneer
Brick goes up course by course, ties embedded in mortar joints, weep holes left open at the base, and all openings flashed before brick continues past them.
- 4
Point and clean
Mortar joints are tooled to the specified profile, the face is brushed down, and any efflorescence from the new mortar is cleaned off once fully cured.

Surrey Masonry FAQs
Brick veneer is a non-structural cladding layer tied back to the structural wall with metal ties and separated by an air gap. Full brick is structural. Veneer is lighter and less expensive to install while giving the same look and weather resistance when it's installed with proper ties, weep holes and flashing.
